Dim Sum for One
Another lazy Saturday in Chinatown and, with growling stomach, I went on the prowl for some quick dim sum. Hop Sing Chatham Restaurant off of Bowery is a good bet if you’re looking for something fast and tasty to enjoy at home.
This diner-cum-dim sum joint offers counter and table service, but if you’re getting food to go, be prepared to fight your way through the crowd and yell out dim sum orders in your loudest Cantonese.
In the time it took for me to get to the front of the line, I saw them run out of cha siu bao, lo bo gao, and shiu mai. But I did come away with some favorites: ha gau, fried shrimp balls, and mushroom wrapped in tofu skins.
We are so upset that they closed this place. We would get our Da Bao here and now we don’t know where to get them? Can you recommend a good place for Da Bao? We now use a place in Flushing but it’s just not the same.
You might want to try Mei Li Wah bakery on Bayard St. I’ve only tried their baked cha siu baos (which are amazing!) and zongzi, but I think you can order dim sum as well. http://www.yelp.com/biz/mei-li-wah-bakery-new-york
