真味面: Real Tasty Noodles

This is one of my favorite pieces of neighborhood artwork, even if it is an ad. The billboard-cum-mural marks the original site of the Twin Marquis noodle manufacturing company at Canal Street and Ludlow.

“Renowned for its noodle and wrapper product line,” the company was founded by two brothers, Joseph and Terry Tang, in 1989. Nowadays Twin Marquis operates mostly out of Williamsburg, distributing kosher noodles and other Chinese food products throughout the nation.

What I love most about this ad is the way it feels both nostalgic and otherworldly, like a lost relic from another era. There is something highly artistic yet restrained in its simple, almost bland representation of a bowl of noodles and a pair of chopsticks. The repetition of “Twin” on either side balances it out while visually reinforcing the name and team behind the enterprise.
